Now That’s Good Preachin’!

Since I’ve arrived at Liberty I have been exposed to so much “preaching” it’s crazy.

Campus church – Sunday and Wednesday.

Convocation – Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

And about half my classes I’d say, the professor pretty much preaches the lesson to us. (I guess that’s what happens when you’re studying the Bible)

I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but recently it’s just made me think a lot about my response to preaching. I would either leave the service or the classroom thinking one of two things: either one, that was an amazing message, or two, ahh that was just whatever, it was okay.

And here is how I would determine that judgement: (And I don’t think I’m the only one that has ever felt this way)

If it was something that I had never heard before, if it was new to me, then it was an awesome message.

But if it was something that I had heard before (which between church and podcast, I’ve heard a ton) then it wasn’t that great.

Recently God’s been showing me just how wrong this attitude is.

If the word of God was preached it wasn’t just a good message, it was a great one. Period.

If Christ and Him crucified was presented then it was a good word. Paul says in 1 Corinthians that that’s all he wanted to know. Christ and Him crucified.

When the word is preached, not watered down, not sugar coated, nothing added to it, then it’s powerful and effective. And it will never return void.
