4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.Philippians 4:4-5

I’ve read or heard verse 4, “rejoice in the Lord always” probably about 837941 times in my life. I know that I’m supposed to rejoice in the Lord. And I don’t think I’m the only one in this boat.

But I would always draw a blank when it came to the end of verse 5, “the Lord is near.” Here’s how it would go:

Rejoice in the Lord always. Check!

Just incase you missed it, rejoice. Check!

Let your gladness be evident to all. (When I rejoice people see that I’m happy.) Check!

The Lord is near. Say huh?!?

This didn’t seem to fit in at all. After reading it over and over, the Lord finally showed me what was up with this.

The Lord is near describes HOW we are to rejoice in the Lord. Let me explain:

So I’m a Minnesotta Twins fan. I know that they’re horrible this year but they’re still cooler than whatever team you like. The DH (designated hitter) for the Twins is none other than, Jim Thome. Jim just recently hit his 600th career home-run, which puts him with the 8th most home-runs in Major League history. What I’m trying to say is that Jim Thome is a stud.

Being a Twins fan, I watch the Twins on TV all of the time. I sit back on my booty with my legs kicked up and watch Jim Thome and the Twins play baseball all stinckin’ day. I occasionally react to the game but for most of the time I’m casually watching the game while I down some food or something.

Then just a couple months ago, I went to see the Twins play when they came to Baltimore. So I’m down on the first row before the game trying to get some players autographs and out runs Jim Thome! I about wet my pants. Like I was flippin’ out. I started yelling at my brothers and Dad to tell them that THERE WAS JIM THOME!! There was some unGodly worship going on, I had to repent.

After all this went down I began to think, “that wasn’t the first time I had seen Jim Thome.” I see him on TV all the time and I don’t react at all. So what was the difference? He was near.

Then I began to think about how many times I react to God like I’m watching Him on TV, when the reality is:

the Lord is near.
